About Us :An introduction........... The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists & Allied Crafts of the United States, its Territories and Canada (I.A.T.S.E) has so expanded down through the years that its name has become largely symbolic rather than descriptive of the full scope of its wide-ranging activities. Gradually, the stage employees and movie operators have been joined by a great variety of other craftspeople in the numerous branches of the entertainment industry, including television; all banding together to achieve the maximum of unified strength. The organization is best known as the I.A.T.S.E however, the members often speak of it as just the I.A.. Now representing over 110,000 members in North America, the IA can best be described as the union of the people behind the scenes in the manifold media of show business. I.A.T.S.E. Local 212 is the Calgary local of the I.A.T.S.E. We are a labour union that represents the women and men behind the scenes of movies, television shows, rock concerts, stage productions, scene shops, special events and trade shows. We proudly represent nearly 900 members in Southern Alberta. Our local represents many fine craftspeople and technicians primarily in the film and theatre and industries. We have crewed nearly 300 feature films and television projects since 1950; our qualifications and experience have contributed to dozens of Academy Award wins and nominations. We have also been involved in the construction and staging of some of the Worlds largest theatre productions for Clients such as Disneyland and Cirque du Soleil. Local 212 has jurisdiction over designated job/craft categories in both stage and film within the geographic confines of Southern Alberta. Please see the following links Stage Depts, Venues and Past Productions for more information on the nature of the work done by our members. The local was granted its charter by the International on July 15th, 1911. Presently the local maintains a working relationship with the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, The Calgary Exhibition & Stampede, the Pengrowth Saddledome, Calgary Opera, Alberta Ballet, F&D Scene Changes, Alberta Theatre Projects, Theatre Calgary and most recently, Theatre Junction. In recent years, we have also expanded our scope to include
tradeshow, audio visual and special event and exhibit work. In
2007 our jurisdiction greatly expanded to include agreements with
Derrick Exhibit,
Exhibit
Installation Service and a, first of its kind, national
agreement with
ColossoVision Canada. Our newest agreement in this area is
with
Mediaco.
