Course Descriptions:

Grip I  A prerequisite in order to apply to the department.
A one-day introduction to grip terminology, equipment, set etiquette and safety. An 80% pass mark on a multiple choice exam at the end of the class is required to be placed on grip permitee list.

LX I - Lamp Operator  A prerequisite in order to apply to the department.
 An introduction course to work with a film electrics crew. Including first day expectations, basic electricity and equipment identification.

Standard First Aid Two day(16 hours) First Aid courses are scheduled for Union members and permitees four or five times a year. Course includes level "C" CPR. Recommended by all departments.

WHMIS - Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System An introduction to the legal responsibilities of suppliers, employers and workers handling hazardous materials. Recommended by all departments. Especially important for construction, make-up, paint, wardrobe and props. Costume Sewing Assessment Level 1 - This is a one hour and twenty minute sewing exam to test basic sewing skills. Passing this exam is also necessary to become a permit in the costume department. There are seven components to complete, which include both machine and hand sewing. A copy of this test is available at the IATSE office and in the costume permitee packages.

Level II (Stitcher Advanced) - A four-hour practical exam for those wishing to apply to the costume department as stitchers.

Set Etiquette & Protocol (For technical position opportunities - co-sponsored by IATSE Local 212 and Mount Royal College) Considering a career in film and television? This workshop, developed with industry unions and taught by experts, is a must. Be introduced to basic film vocabulary and important first-day etiquette. Discover what personal supplies may be needed, what questions to ask the dispatcher and how to fill out an employee start package.

This is a required course for admission into the motion picture departments of IATSE Local 212 and the Director's Guild of Canada, Alberta District Council.
